UPDATE: No Backyard Chickens For Riverview

There won’t be any clucking coming from your neighbours backyard in the near future.

A by-law that would have allowed backyard chickens in Riverview was voted down last night by Town Council.

Deputy Mayor Cecile Cassista says she has been against this idea since day one, ” I absolutely did vote against this, I have been against it since day one. I have done a tremendous amount of research on this. I grew up on a farm, so I know exactly what the smell of the chicken droppings are. Chickens do make a certain amount of dust, and noise. I also think the chickens should be free running and on a farm. “

This isn’t the first time this issue has been before Riverview Town Council. It was first discussed in 2004 and then again in 2013, but Cassista says there are things that need to be looked at first before, if it ever comes before Council again, “We need to be well educated, and we would need to talk about conflicts with wildlife. We heard a lot of that last night. People were talking about animals and wildlife that could be out, rodents as well. So those are the kind of things that need to be taken into account.”

Cassista says over 30 letters and several petitions from residents were received stating concerns over the chickens.

Enforcement was one of the main concerns for Town Councillors who voted against.
