Concerned Citizens Want To Protect Local Extramural Services

Healthcare is still a priority for the Concerned Citizens of Charlotte County group.

Last week, they successfully rallied to keep the OR open at the Charlotte County Hospital.

Now, the group is setting their aim on Extramural nurses.

Co-chair of the group, John Gardner says there is a lot of uncertainty about the Extramural program and whether Medavie Blue Cross has taken over.

He tells us the extramural nurses in our community are excellent at what they do, and they have a great support system in administration locally.

“Those people who are making the schedules, those people who are sending the nurses out, they know the people here in Charlotte County. We need to keep things local. We need to take control of our county. And we need to keep Horizon [Health] ‘s feet to the fire as well and say, ‘You know what? You need to listen to the concerns here. This hospital is covering a wide area, we’re basically almost a regional hospital on our own.’ So that’s what we’re looking for, to continue the input into government and into Horizon, and still taking control over our healthcare.”

Gardner says if Medavie takes over the Extramural program, the government will be putting a crown jewel in community healthcare at risk.
