At the Olympics, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion won a diving bronze medal in the 10 metre synchro for Canada…..In women’s soccer, Canada upset Germany 2-1…..Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley remain undefeated in beach volleyball after a win over Switzerland……Swimmer Micheal Phelps won his 21st gold medal as the U.S. won the 4 by 200 metre relay. Earlier, Phelps struck gold by winning the 200 metre butterfly. In tennis, world number one Serena Williams lost in the third round.

In the Majors, the Boston Red Sox hung on for a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees with fans at Fenway Park chanting for Alex Rodriguez late in the game…..The Toronto Blue Jays lost to Tampa Bay 9-2 but remain tied for first in the American League East after Baltimore lost to Oakland 2-1….The Red Sox are one and a half games out……In the National League West, San Francisco and Los Angeles are tied for first after the Giants lost to Miami 2-0 while the Dodgers beat Philadelphia 9-3. In other play, it was Texas 7 Colorado 5…..Cleveland 3 Washington 1…..Pittsburgh 6 San Diego 4……Arizona 5 NY Mets 3…..Chicago Cubs 5 Los Angeles Angels 1….Atlanta 2 Milwaukee 1……Houston 7 Minnesota 5…..Chicago White Sox 7 Kansas City 5 (10 innings)……Cincinnta 7 St. Louis 4 and Seattle 6 Detroit 5 (15 innings).

It appears the career of Prince Fielder of the Texas Rangers is over because of a herniated disc in his neck. Doctors will not clear him to play.
