Marathon By The Sea Has Grown Over Last Couple Years, Co-Director Says

The numbers for the Marathon By the Sea event in Saint John, which is described as the east coast’s only summertime racing event, have been growing over the last couple of years.

That’s according to co-director Rod Paul who says moving the event back uptown Saint John helped a lot.

“We’re starting to see a lot more interest,” says Paul. “And now that we have it an all weekend event, it’s kind of a destination you can actually use it as a holiday get-away the whole family and everyone has something they can do.”

The event sees people from all over the world. This year people from as far away as Australia are coming to Marathon by the Sea.

“It’s actually a global event. Our major runners are in the local area, your Saint John, Fredericton, Moncton area but we get people up from the States, we’ve got people from overseas. It’s quite a huge running event.”

The City is warning of how the marathon on Sunday morning will impact traffic: one eastbound lane over the Harbour Bridge as well as the off-ramp to Chesley Drive will be closed between 6:30am and 3pm on that day. The speed limit in the one remaining eastbound lane before and on the bridge will be reduced to 50 kilometres per hour.
