Farmers In Province Welcome Local Food Movement

The local food movement appears to be gaining momentum and it could come too soon for farmers in the province. Fred Pope, co-owner of Belleisle Farms, says provincial farming has taken a hit over the last two decades with just a handful farming now on a commercial basis.

He calls farming a risky business because you don’t know if you’ll make any money until the end of the year and a lot depends on how well your crops do.

Pope says having local produce also helps the stores big time to attract new customers.

Pope says you have to have a connection with the big companies and he has an arrangement with Loblaws and the Superstore.
