Study On Water Meters For All

A study on universal water meters in Saint John is expected to be ready for Common Council by next May or June.

Common Councillors Gary Sullivan and Gerry Lowe have spoken out in favour of metering. Saint John Water Commissioner Brent McGovern can understand why because you wind up paying for what you use.

McGovern warns there will be a cost associated with universal metering at a time when the debt at Saint John Water has reach a high of $107 million because of the clean drinking water project. He says Saint John Water can’t take on any more debt and he’s not sure how much universal metering of water in the city will cost. That will be spelled out in the study to be done.

The debt at Saint John Water is expected to gradually go down to $56 million by 2025.
