Common Council to ask province to remove machinery and equipment exemption from property tax assessment

Common Council will soon be sending a letter to Premier Brian Gallant, who is also the Regional Minister for the Saint John area in hopes of persuading government to remove an exemption in the property tax assessments that is costing the city a lot of lost revenue.

Councillor Gerry Lowe brought forth the motion to have heavy machinery and equipment taxed which includes the oil tanks and pipelines that connect to the tanks.

Lowe says the city is losing out on a great deal of revenue by not having such a tax in place.

The motion was passed but Councillor Greg Norton was opposed saying it sends the wrong message to both businesses and the province.
