The provincial government has introduced legislation to enhance animal protection.
The legislative changes would increase penalties for fighting contests with fines as high as $200, 000, and would also mean fines of up to $5200 if you abandon an animal.
Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins was very pleased to see these changes introduced yesterday, “This law is coming out in response to these different groups that have expressed profound concern with existing laws for protection of animals. I’m very excited about the fact that it came forward as a result of my constituents coming to me, and then I passed the concern onto government and introduced my constituents to the respective ministers.”
He says, “It still must be debated in the house, but it has been received very positively by the original organizations that had the concern.”
If passed, it will also include annual funding of $100,000 to the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Collins added, “I’m sure my dog Guinness is looking at me with a lot more respect today.”
