Regional Spelling Bee Happening In Saint John This Weekend

A regional spelling bee this weekend is giving local students the chance to go on to compete in Washington D.C. at the Scripps Nationals.

New Brunswick students, including some from Saint John, along with students from PEI are participating at this spelling bee on Saturday.

Laurie Collins of Big Brothers Big Sisters Saint John, which is hosting the bee, says that there’s a lot of studying involved that that some of these words are pretty difficult.

“I can’t disclose any of the words in the competition, however, I have seen the the list of words that the pronouncers will be taking from to ask the kids to spell and some of them are very complicated,” says Collins.

“You can imagine with lots of eyes on you and silence in the room while you’re thinking about spelling – you know that extra pressure that you would feel as a young person but these kids are amazing.”

The regional bee is happening at the UNBSJ campus in Sir Douglas Hazen Hall Lecture Theatre. The event formally starts at noon but those taking part will be arriving to register at 11.
