Ability New Brunswick would like to see fines increased for drivers who illegally park in spaces reserved for the disabled.
Executive Director Haley Flaro says the fine in Saint John is $30-dollars and they would like to see it increased to $172.50.
She says they are asking municipalities to increase the fine to act as more of a deterrant and one way to address the misuse of accessible parking.
Flaro says over 16 percent of New Brunswickers have a disability with the most common form being mobility.
She says New Brunswick also has the oldest population in Canada and says we haven’t done a great job in planning for an aging population.
Flaro says people who feel they need a pass should go to Service New Brunswick with a recommendation from a physician.
