The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the provincial government to make changes to the way property taxes are assessed.
The Federation’s Atlantic Director Kevin Lacey says with unjustifiably large increases in some assessments, the province could rightly be accused of a tax grab.
The changes Lacey would like to see are having the assessments done by independent people who operate at arm’s length from government, which is how it’s done in Nova Scotia, and a cap tied to the rate of inflation.
Provincial Conservative leader Blaine Higgs is calling on all property owners in the province whose tax assessments went up to appeal since the province isn’t willing to extend the deadline to do so.
Service New Brunswick recently did extend the deadline for 24 hundred property owners where miscalculations were found.
