Green Party Warns Crisis Looming In Seniors Home Care

Will there be enough home care workers in the province to take care of seniors who wish to live in their homes for as long as possible?

Provincial Green Party leader David Coon says the auditor-General estimates there will be the need for 5 thousand new home care workers in the next five years and he warns a crisis is on the horizon.

Coon says new contracts with the home care agencies do not require an increase in wages for the caregivers in spite of the province’s professed desire to have seniors remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

He points out the Council on Aging is recommending an attractive wage scale be established for the home care workers.
