Now that the warmer weather has arrived, you may be thinking about work that needs to be done around the house or yard.
If you are thinking about hiring someone to do the work, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind.
Spokesperson for the New Brunswick Financial and Consumer Services Commission Alaina Nicholson recommends when you start your search, ” Make a list of competitive bidders. Ask your family, and friends and your neighbours. Contact the Canadians Homebuilders Association in your province or your local Chamber of Commerce. Never settle on the first bid, or only get one bid.”
She says you’ll probably find Contractors will be knocking at your door, “They may be offering to do yard work, offering to pave your driveway or offering to do your roof. Most of those people that are offering those types of services, require a license. You have the right to ask to see that license.”
She also suggests you shop around and get references, “Once you have chosen the person that you want to have do the work, always get a written contract. That contract should have a detailed cost breakdown including materials. Make sure that you go over it with them, before you sign off. Never pay up front, before you have everything in writing, and always get receipts for all of the payments you do make.”
