Athletes from across the country began arriving in Moncton over the weekend, in advance of this week’s inaugural Canadian Under-18 Boys and Girls Curling Championships.

The event is being hosted by Curl Moncton, and is open to players who are under the age of 17 years old.

All of the provinces, with the exception of Nunavut and Yukon entered teams into the event.

Vice President for Curl Moncton Jacques Robichaud says the popularity of the sport continues to grow….and this event gives it another boost, “Anytime you have a national championship that is held in a locality, it boosts the sport in the region. You see curling on television almost every weekend, and that also helps to boost the sport nationally.”

The Championships will kick-off tomorrow with the opening ceremonies at the Superior Propane Centre at 9:30 a.m.

The first round of games will follow at 11 a.m.

Robichaud says tickets to the event are available now, “You can go online to the Curl Moncton website and purchase your tickets, or on the official Canadian U18 website on Curl Canada and purchase your tickets.”

He says if anyone is interested in learning to play the game, ” We offer a learn to curl, and it is a seven week session. People when they finish, we integrate them into leagues, so it is fairly easy to learn. It is a sport you can start at age six and play until you are 96.”
