Warning On Seniors Being Kept In Hospitals Too Long

The provincial government needs to do more for its aging population other than conducting study after study with no action.

That from Cecile Cassista, Executive Director for the Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Homes Residents Rights.

Cassista says seniors are being kept in hospital beds at an average cost of $800 a day per senior citizen when they could be moved to a special care or retirement home for $45 a day.

She says the longer seniors are kept in hospital beds the weaker they become.

Cassista says the province should follow the lead of Ontario by publicly funding retirement homes.

She says New Brunswick needs to move senior costs out of social development and into the health department where the medicare dollars are.
