In 2012, Tom McKay found out he needed to have a new kidney. He has been on the list since then, for an organ donation.
It turns out, the match was a lot closer than he thought.
McKay and Troy Hebert both have an interest in motorcycles. They have been friends for around seven years.
Last year, Hebert was tested to see if he could be the one to help his friend, by donating a kidney, and it turns out he was a match, “Because of our blood types, it turns out it is a rare match. It’s not that we have rare blood, form what I understand, but it is a rare match.”
The two of them will be admitted to hospital in Halifax and the surgery will be done on June 29tth, “We will be admitted 24 hours prior. I will have two or three months recovery therafter. I have talked to a few donors who have told me what to expect.”
Hebert says this is kind of surreal, “It is kind of overwhelming on myself, to know that you can help someone that way. it makes me feel really good about myself.”
He adds, “I had previously signed up to be an organ donor, on my license, many years ago. It is a great cause, for anyone. It is tragic, premature death because someone needs a donation, vut premature death can also help someone. I have a cousoin who passed away, about a month ago, and she helped five people with her donations from what I understand. It is good that we are raising awareness about this cause as well. It’s really just a mindset, to push yourself through it and do something good for someone else.”
