Senate Wants To Speed Up Criminal Justice

People are literally getting away with murder because of delays in being tried for serious crimes.

The Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs has released 50 recommendations to reduce delays in Canada’s justice system.

Senator George Baker says the number one recommendation is to set time lines from the time a person is charged to when they go on trial. He says it’s 100 days in the U.S. and six months in Russia. Baker points out it takes five to ten times longer for a trial to be held in Canada as compared to New Zealand and Australia.

Baker says there should be full disclosure of evidence before the trial gets underway unless there are extenuating circumstances.
