Whale rescue operations remain suspended as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans continues a review following the death of Joe Howlett last summer.
The New Brunswick fisherman and whale rescuer died trying to disentangle a whale off the Acadian Peninsula.
Minister Dominic LeBlanc says discussions are underway with stakeholders and a plan is coming soon.
“I don’t think people should assume that the current circumstance will be exactly the same when the season comes. But we need to ensure that we have the best and safest protocols in place,” he notes.
LeBlanc says his main responsibility is to ensure the safety of those working under dangerous circumstances and he adds rescues will be suspended until a safe operational plan is ready.
