There is still hope despite the high rate of child poverty in Saint John.
At 29 per cent it’s the highest of any major city in the country.
Randy Hatfield of the Human Development Council tells CHSJ News
they are encouraged by the new Federal government.
He says their platform calls for tweaks to the child tax benefit which he sales alone will remove 300,000 Canadian children from poverty.
Those battling poverty have a big task ahead of them when you consider that 40,000 New Brunswickers receive social assistance and 30,000 people rely on employment insurance in a province with the lowest minimum wage in the country.
