February Is National Suicide Prevention Month

February is Suicide Prevention Month in New Brunswick. Dr Greg Zed tells CHSJ News while we hear a lot these days about young people ending their own lives, suicide is actually the most common among men in their 50s and 60s who may have health problems or be dealing with major life stressors like divorce.

He says we rank right in the middle when it comes to suicide rates compared with other provinces at about 100 each year, but anecdotal evidence suggests that number is going down.

Zed says in his view, people don’t commit suicide – they die from diseases like depression, bipolar, and anxiety, which are deadly when not addressed properly with counselling or medication.
