Decisionmakers Are In Dark About True Cost Of Transportation

A report prepared by researchers at U-N-B seems to bolster the argument that bus service in Saint John is underfunded.

That new study from the Urban and Community Studies Institute claims we are too dependent on cars in this province for our own economic well being.

Yves Bourgeois is the Institute’s Director and he questions how wise decisions can be made if you’re in the dark about the true cost of transportation. Bourgeois says we have never determined the cost of subsidising the use of private vehicles compared to the cost of public transit.

The President of the Transit Union Tom McGraw tells CHSJ News the city seems to have lost its way when it comes to bus service when you heard talk all the time a few years ago about public transit being the green wave of the future.

McGraw doesn’t see how Plan SJ, with greater urban density, can work without having better bus service.
