A new computerized buoy that’s going to be anchored off the coast of Saint John will not only report wind, weather, and wave direction to boaters, but could also be a lifesaver if there’s ever an oil spill.
Captain Andre Rae explains the 1.5 tonne buoy will be installed in April, and its onboard systems will update a website regularly with a huge range of information.
Data captured from the buoy over time will give researchers a model to predict where the oil would drift if we did have a spill, and let cleanup crews work faster to contain it.
When it goes live in April the data will be able to be viewed at smartatlantic.ca.
