Coon Says First Nations’ Chiefs Forestry Injunction Request Was “Inevitable”

Provincial Green Party Leader David Coon is unsurprised the Assembly of First Nations Chiefs in New Brunswick is seeking to stop the new forestry strategy in its tracks with an injunction. A court decision will be coming down Friday.

Coon tells us the Alward Government has essentially thumbed its nose at the law by failing to consult with the province’s First Nations people on what he calls radical changes to the way publicly own land will be managed in the province and says the relationship between aboriginal people and the government couldn’t get any worse.

Premier David Alward says he invited the province’s chiefs to meet this week but he was turned down.

The new forestry plan for the province will see the the amount of protected old growth forest go down from 30 percent to 23 percent while allowing 20 percent more softwood to be cut on public land every year.
