ALS Society Of NB “Humbled, Inspired” By Ice Bucket Challenge

Videos of people getting buckets of ice-water dumped on their heads have dominated Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites for the past few weeks and the money is pouring in to ALS societies.

ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s, is a devastating, fast-moving and fatal neuromuscular disease. Kimberly Carter of the New Brunswick chapter says they’re overwhelmed, humbled and inspired by the way the Ice Bucket Challenge, which raises funds awareness for ALS, has caught on across the country.

Carter says the fact is that someone suffering from ALS may lose their ability to walk, talk and breathe on their own but they don’t lose their ability to give and receive love and be relevant in their homes and communities. She says with the challenge, they don’t lose their sense of humour either.

She says the average person with ALS will use 70-thousand-dollars worth of equipment for things like breathing and communication. According to Carter the national Ice Bucket Challenge campaign has reached 9-million-dollars. To donate, go to als.ca
