It wasn’t meant to be for Hampton’s Jeff Smith at the BDO’s World Darts Championship. Smith lost seven sets to one in the final to Scott Waites of England. The 40 year-old secured a berth in next year’s World Championships. This is the second year in a row that Smith made it to the final four in the tournament.
In the NFL playoffs, Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns as Green Bay came back from an 11-0 deficit to beat Washington 35-18……Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh missed a 27 yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds remaining and Seattle hung on for a 10-9 win over the Vikings.
Matthew Highmore scored a hat trick, including the game winner as the Sea Dogs rallied for a 5-4 win over Rimouski.
In the NHL, Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the first period as Florida won its 12th straight, 2-1 over Edmonton……Chicago won its 7th in a row, 6-3 over Colorado…..Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th and 501st goals of his career as Washington beats Ottawa 7-1……Detroit won its fourth in a row, 2-1 over Anaheim….It was Buffalo over Winnipeg 4-2 and New Jersey got by Minnesota 2-1.
In the National Basketball League, the Saint John Mill Rats defeated Charlottetown 108-88,
At the Riverboat Classic Basketball Tournament…….Sussex High won the girls championship, 68-57 over Kennebecasis Valley High. The Horton Griffins won the boys title with a 64-54 win over Fredericton High.
At the Top of the Hill Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament at Rothesay-Netherwood, St. Stephen won the final 43-42 over James M. Hill.
