Students Disappointed At Talk Of Funding Cuts To Universities

The New Brunswick Student Alliance is alarmed at word the province is considering a freeze or reduction in funding for universities.

As part of the Strategic Program Review, the government estimates it couls save from 15 to 45 million dollars a year.

Student Alliance Executive-Director Lindsay Handren warns there will be a cost since 60 per cent of jobs over the next decade will require post secondary education.By contrast, Handren points out Manitoba is increasing its funding for universities in that province by 4 per cent.

Handren says if you cut operating grants to universities, chances are tuition fees will have to be raised to try to make up the difference. She also observes of the ten provinces, New Brunswick now ranks 8th in terms of funding for universities.
