The Federal Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna announcing 13.5 million dollars will be spent to literally rebuild Martello Tower on the west side. Another 8 million dollars will be spent on upgrades to Fundy National Park.
The rebuilding of Martello Tower is a two year project which is expected to begin in the spring of 2017. Martello Tower has sustained water damage over the years. Stabalisation of a section of the exterior of the tower is now underway so it doesn`t fall away.
Martello Tower dates from the War of 1812 and was used in the Second World War as part of the coastal defense to look out for German submarines. Last year the number of visitors increased by 37 per cent.
This will be the first major refurbishment of the tower since it was built.
