Shorebirds Protected Area Expanded Near Dorchester

Millions of shorebirds arrive in the Upper Bay of Fundy every summer near Dorchester and now their protected area has been expanded thanks to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Spokesperson Andrew Holland says area landowners have sold 57 acres of land to the non-profit organization which means over 500 acres of land is now protected for critical shorebirds such as the semi-palmated sandpiper.

“When they come to Johnson’s Mills, they weigh the size of half a chocolate bar and they double their body weight. They eat and sleep here for about three weeks so then they can migrate to South America for the winter.”

Holland says the Johnson’s Mills interpretive centre is now open daily for the summer which allows visitors incredible views of migratory birds and the Bay of Fundy.
