Deputy Mayor Shelley Rinehart will be running for Mayor in the May municipal election thus becoming the first candidate to announce.
Mayor Mel Norton earlier announced he would not seek re-election, leaving the race wide open.
Besides being Deputy mayor, Rinehart is a Professor of Marketing and MBA Director in the Faculty of Business at UNB Saint John and has been at the forefront of the city’s True Growth strategy.
She ran unsuccessfully provincially for Liberals in the Saint John East byelection in 2014 after Gary Keating suddenly announced his resignation shortly after winning the seat in the provincial election.
