The City of Saint John has to find 2.3 million dollars in savings in order to balance the budget: and it’s pretty clear those savings aren’t going to be found by cutting back on roads.
City Manager Pat Woods explains 40% of the budget is tied up in preexisting commitments.
The consensus seemed to be that the community grants, which fund organizations from Cherry Brook Zoo to the Human Development Council to local arts foundations, will be one place to find savings.
Mayor Mel Norton explains people have said better roads are what they want with recreation another stated priority.
Another meeting is scheduled for Thursday night at which time a balanced budget is expected to be presented.
