Goalie Marc-Antoine Turcotte has been named the Sea Dogs’ most valuable player for the 2015-16 season. Matthew Joseph picked up three awards, including most improved player for the second year in a row, fans choice award and the three stars award. Matthew Highmore received the top scorer, team player and community service awards. 16-year-old Joseph Veleno was named rookie of the year. Thomas Chabot was honoured as the top defenseman.
In the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens slowed down the Anaheim Ducks’ drive to the playoffs with a 4-3 win……Washington clinched top seed in the East for the playoffs with a 6-2 win over Ottawa….Tampa Bay tied Florida for first in the Atlantic Division after a 6-2 win over Detroit….Dallas clinched a playoff spot with a 6-2 win over Chicago….Minnesota got by Los Angeles 2-1….Brian Elliot recorded the shutout as St. Louis blanks San Jose 1-0….Philadelphia blew a two goal lead in the final 65 seconds, losing to Columbus in a shootout 3-2….Winnipeg shut out Vancouver 2-0….Arizona downed Edmonton 4-2 and Buffalo edged Carolina 3-2.
With U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro on hand, Tampa Bay defeated the Cuban national team 4-1 before a capacity crowd in Havana. Forner Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant threw out the first pitch. This was the first time a Major League team had played in Cuba in 17 years.
At the World Women’s Curling Championship, Canada won two matches, 5-4 over Italy and 7-5 over Germany. Canada is tied for first with Switzerland and Scotland with records of 6 and 1.
