Since August, 120,000 pounds of food from Sobey’s stores has been put aside for food banks instead of going to the landfill.
Joe O’Brien from the Sobey’s location in Grand Bay tells CHSJ News the food being diverted is not expired.
He says the food is a few days from expiring and they don’t want to charge customers full price for it and that used to be thrown away but now can be given to the food banks.
This began as a pilot project in Moncton through the New Brunswick Association of Food Banks.
Association president Laurie Stewart tells us the food banks stay in touch with the stores and they go by a couple times a week to pick of the food.
He says the recipients are pretty excited to get produce and meat.
