Animals To Be Given Greater Legal Protection

The provincial government will be introducing legislation to change how animals are treated along with a yearly funding commitment of $100 thousand for the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
There will be a new offence for abandoning animals as well as increased penalties for fighting contests, improperly tieing up animals and failing to humanely euthanize an animal.

The Municipalities Act is also going to be changed. The province says the changes will empower local governments with broad powers, increased flexibility and autonomy. The changes reflect consultation with various organisations that represent the municipalities.
