Breaking The Stigma Surrounding Suicide

Opening up, and creating a support network for suicide prevention, that’s just one of the goals of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

February is Suicide Prevention Month in New Brunswick.

Operations Manager Kristen Barnes says there is a fear around talking about the issue of suicide, “Many people are afraid to ask somebody, are you considering suicide or are you thinking of harming yourself. We are often afraid of asking questions because we don’t know how to respond, Often people want to talk about it, but can’t because it is so stigmatized, it is very difficult.”

Barnes adds, “We’re opening up a platform for people to be able to talk about it and reach out for help. We’re also bringing awareness to the importance of being there and creating that support network or responding in an effective way, no matter who you are.”

CMHA offers many different programs for those suffering from mental health concerns that include support groups and help lines. For more details, visit HERE.
