Bus Ridership Is Down

The Transit Commission will be making a presentation to Common Council tonight on the state of bus service in the city.

Because of budget concerns, the level of bus service has been reduced over the past few years. The number of people using public transit in the city has decreased. At the same time, fares have gone up and for every 10% increase in fares, there’s usually a 3% reduction in ridership.

Councillors are being told both revenue and expenses are under budget but not by enough to avoid a budget shortfall.

Federal funding for Transit has been announced with Saint John’s share in the order of $3.7 million but the city has to match that amount.
