How does Canada rank in the Democracy Index released by The Economist magazine? Not too bad, as it turns out.
Canada is tied with Ireland in sixth place. That compares to the US which is 21st, tied with Italy.
The Economist concludes the U.S. has become a “flawed democracy” with only 19% of Americans trusting their government to do the right thing. 74% think most elected officials put their own interests ahead of the country’s. 57% are frustrated with government and 22% are angry.
There has been a similar decline seen in Europe over the past decade.
The top five countries in the Democracy Index are Norway, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Denmark.
