Candidates For St. Stephen Mayor Talk About Change

The Candidates running for Mayor of St. Stephen in the upcoming municipal election are talking about changes within the town, and how to keep us moving forward.

Allan McEachern says any changes in the Town should be kept on the same path we’re on now. “We’ve made some huge changes in the last term, the last 3 1/2 years we’ve got in so far, and I want to keep those changes. There obviously some policies I want to still work on, but of course, it takes time.”

The current Deputy Mayor points to the tax rate, which he says is high, but says he’s proud of the current town council for being able to keep that rate on hold for the past four years with good budgeting, and he would like to continue that if possible.

He says, in order to do that, you need to keep council informed, keep all the department heads on budget, and work hard at it.

Abby Pond, who is also running for mayor, and also sits on the current St. Stephen Town Council, says the biggest thing we need to change is already happening, and that’s our perspective of ourselves.

“We need to think about ourselves, and about our town as a great place to be… because it is. And we need to see ourselves as having a future, which we do.”

Pond says St. Stephen is a town full of resources, with great cornerstones in our major employers, a diversified small business base, volunteers who step up for so amny different things, along with the Civic Center, and the cross-border advantage, “We have so many wonderful things in our community, we need to celebrate those things, and take pride in them, and shout about them to the rest of the world so they will all want to live here.”

The municipal election is this Monday, May 9th.
