Charges laid after massive diesel spill in Woodstock

A huge diesel fuel spill in Woodstock has led to charges against Irving Oil and Grant Enterprises Limited.

Two counts under the Clean Environment Act were laid this week.

This comes after around 180,000 litres of diesel were released on Beardsley Road in December 2024, and the spill was not immediately reported.

Petroleum odours were detected in a well on a nearby commercial property, and an investigation determined that diesel fuel had been released due to equipment failure.

Environmental response actions were undertaken, and a clean-up, including the recovery of the fuel, was done. There is also continued monitoring and remediation of the affected area.

Under paragraph 33(1)(b) of the act, these offences carry a potential fine ranging up to $1 million.
