Saint John is considering changing a zoning bylaw to allow large-scale medical marijuana production facilities in certain industrial zones of the city.
This has the backing of Saint John city staff, who say that inquiries have already been made by the community about locations zoned for the establishments of these facilities and also point to the province having said they are part of their economic growth strategy.
These would be different than the marijuana dispensaries in the city which have been the target of raids by police twice now. Staff say these large scale production facilities have to obtain a licence to operate and there are two already-existing facilities in the province: Organigram in Moncton and Zenabis in Campbellton.
This is coming up before council at their meeting this evening and if they give it the green light then it could go to the Planning Advisory Committee’s April 19 meeting then possibly get final approval by May 15.
