City Police are reviewing the sexual assault investigations that were classified as unfounded starting from 2010.
Police Chief John Bates says they want to ensure the sexual assault cases were properly investigated. In 2014, Police decided the classification ‘unfounded’ was being applied too broadly in Saint John.
Chief Bates points out between 2014 and 2016, the application of ‘unfounded’ dropped by 50% when compared to the time between 2010 and 2013.
The classification of unfounded is not standardised among police across the country but depends on which jurisdiction you’re in.
