Climate Change and Energy Initiative Launched By Union Of Municipalities Of NB

The Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick has launched its Climate Change and Energy Initiative.

Executive Director Raymond Murphy says eleven municipalities have agreed to take part in the initiative.

Murphy says the fact eleven municipalities have decided that climate change and energy initiatives is important is a great sign for the future of our province.

The municipalities include Saint John, Quispamsis, Rothesay, Woodstock, Sussex, Grand Bay-Westfield, Dalhousie, Perth-Andover, Petitcodiac, McAdam and Rexton.

The initiative will allow municipalities to contribute to meeting green house gas reduction targets in the New Brunswick Climate Action Plan.

The announcement was held in Quispamsis and Mayor Gary Clark says the town has been a leader in the province.

He points to the energy friendly Q-plex and the electric cars the town uses.

Eddie Oldfield is the Chair of Quest New Brunswick, which is a non-profit organization that looks to advance Smart Energy Communities in Canada.

Oldfield says the city of Fredericton is the furthest along in the province in terms of smart energy, and the city of Bathurst as well.

He says Guelph, Ontario, is a prime example of what communities should strive to be like.
