Eye opening and sobering are how Saint John Mayor Don Darling reacted to a report from the city manager Jeff Trail on fair property taxation.
The report calls on the provincial government to not levy provincial property taxes, give the city more control over taxation and end the property tax assessment freeze as soon as possible.
The recommendations were unanimously passed by the councillors.
Mayor Don Darling says this report needs to be read by everyone in the city and he hopes the province will be willing to talk about it.
The City is also calling on the province to lift the property taxation exemption of machinery and equipment for industry, something that could mean a lot of money for Saint John according to Councillor Gerry Lowe who says there has to be at least seven billion dollars worth of industrial equipment in Saint John.
