Community Leaders Awarded For Dedication And Hard Work

A number of outstanding community leaders and volunteers in Southwest New Brunswick were given a thank you this weekend for all their hard work and dedication to their communities.

A number of those recipients are from Charlotte County:

Carol Ann Jackson was recognized for her work with the Kiwanis Club of St. Stephen, as well as with youth through the SSHS Key Club.

Sharon Ingalls was awarded for her work as an EMT, and the long hours spent volunteering with the Grand Manan Nursing Home.

Another recipient was Dr. Lois Mitchell of Deer Island, who launched the Department of International Studies at St. Stephen’s University, introducing students to environmental stewardship and reconciliation with indigenous peoples.

Debbie Lord of Saint Andrews was recognized for her work with young people through the Community Youth Activity Centre.

Fuat Gumushel, an immigrant from Turkey who built a successful business in Saint Andrews, and also volunteered his time to help Syrian refugees was awarded.

Jimmy Hawkins was recognized for the tremendous amount of work to grow and maintain the Beaver Harbour Community Archives.

Laura Lee Carrier of St. George, for her work through the Eastern Charlotte Association of Community Living, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Food Bank, the Canadian Cancer Society, MADD Canada, and many other organizations. Her “inclusiveness” outlook on life was also mentioned.

Frank Carroll was also awarded for his volunteerism with the Lakeland Sheltered Workshop, the McAdam Historical Society, and for engaging youth by providing jobs and leading tours at the Railway Station.

Other recipients also included Cory Ryan from Grand Bay-Westfield, Pastor Edward Powell from Grand Bay-Westfield, Adelaide King from Island View, and Robin Hanson from Fredericton Junction.

Southwest NB MP Karen Ludwig presented each recipient with a limited edition Canada150 Sesquicentennial pin, which incorporates the original copper used in Canada’s Parliament buildings.
