Concern Grows Over Rail Safety

The recent train derailments in northern Ontario are causing concern in the Saint John area.

Rothesay Mayor Bill Bishop can understand why and the town is no exception. One area of concern is with the increase in rail traffic, how close some homes in Rothesay are to the railway tracks and the fact there’s only one exit from Kennebecasis Park should a derailment happen there.

Bishop says a committee, headed by Deputy Mayor Nancy Grant, has been working with people in the town to update the town’s emergency measures plan.

He says it’s close to being finalised and expects it will be presented to town council in the next month or so.

Common Councillor David Merrithew wants to hear from Fire Chief Kevin Clifford on the emergency plan for Saint John in the event of a derailment in the city.
