Conservation Council Says Spending On Clean Energy Creates Jobs

New Brunswick has to do a lot more to combat climate change. That message was delivered to the Climate Change Committee at the Legislature by the Conservation Council. It’s specialist on Climate Change Louise Comeau says $500 million should be invested in energy efficiency a year which would create thousands of jobs.

Comeau says the energy system of New Brunswick needs a complete overhaul and electricity is key. The Conservation Council says the goal with electricity should be the phaseout of coal and use of 100 per cent renewables.

The Conservation Council says there should be programs in place that would prompt polluters to use clean energy and practive more sustainable forestry and agriculture production.

Comeau also predicts there will be a price on carbon, if not by the province then certainly imposed by the federal government.

She presented the committee with research showing 75 per cent of New Brunswickers believe the earth is getting warmer but only 8 and a half per cent think carbopn dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions are primarily responsible for climate change.
