Department Of Fisheries And Oceans Spotted Another Entangled Right Whale Off Gaspé Peninsula

Another North Atlantic Right Whale is entangled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Gaspé Peninsula.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans tweeted they are assessing and monitoring the situation and a Government of Canada plane has surveyed the area.

DFO paused their disentanglement operations, pending a policy and practices review, after the death of Joe Howlett on July 10th while taking part in a rescue operation.

At least 13 Right Whales have been found dead off Atlantic Canada and New England since the first week of June with estimates saying less than 500 are left.

In August, the DFO and Transport Canada put in place a speed restriction of 10 knots on vessels larger than 20 metres, and asking for a voluntary reduction for vessels under that size.

That speed limit applies to the area below.
