Draft City Budget Contains Major Cuts

There should be lots of discussion tonight at Common Council with the presentation of the city’s 2018 draft budget with over $2.5 million in cuts.

The draft budget includes reductions to police with the possibility of layoffs and increased response times, the fire department which could be looking at a fire station being closed as well as increased response times and reduced hours for Saint John Transit.

Mayor Don Darling has a message for Saint Johnners……..The city is broke and he’s not prepared to kick the can down the road any longer.

The President of the Saint John Firefighters Association Peter Alexander warns policing and fire protection are the top two priorities for Saint Johnners followed by roads and water.

Bob Davidson of the Saint John Police Association argues if the Irving Oil refinery were to pay tax on its $2 billion worth of equipment and machinery, it would mean an additional $20 million in tax revenue for the city.
