E-Cig Battery Fire Leaves Riverview Man With Burns

An overheated battery from an e-cig left a Riverview man with burns to his stomach and leg.

Wayne Walker says he put his spare battery in his pocket, along with his car keys`, and a short time later a fire started in his coat pocket, “My jacket flared up, and it turns out the battery came in contact with other things in my pocket and caused it to explode. The battery fell out of my pocket, because there was no pocket left, and it bounced a couple of times. Where it landed, it actually burned a hole in the floor, because it was so hot.”

He was unaware anything like this could even happen, “Not really much on the box except for serial number of the battery and whatever you may need. It is just wrapped up in a piece of plastic and that’s it. “

Walker says he spoke with a member of the Moncton Fire Department who investigated the incident who explained this is not an uncommon incident. Walker says he was told that batteries can overheat when they come in contact with other metals.
