UPDATED: Fire At Uptown Rooming House

A small fire Wednesday night forced the evacuation of a rooming house in uptown Saint John.

Ed Moyer, platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, said they were called to 113 Princess Street — home of the Lantern House — just after 9 p.m.

“Crews found light smoke billowing from the front of a 29-room boarding house,” said Moyer.

Police officers and paramedics were already helping residents out of the structure, he said.

Moyer said firefighters made their way inside and quickly extinguished a small fire in one of the apartments.

They also searched the building and helped evacuate the remaining residents, he said.

The Canadian Red Cross said it provided emergency lodging and meals to two men displaced by the fire.

Police said no injuries were reported and the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
