Fire Forces Evacuation At Southeast Correctional Centre In Shediac

Extensive damage was done to the Southeast Correctional Centre in Shediac, after a fire broke out yesterday afternoon.

Heavy black smoke was first spotted billowing from the building at around 3 o’clock and it could be seen from kilometres away.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety says the fire started in an area of the jail that does not house any inmates.

Around 160 inmates had to be evacuated, and they were transported, but officials would not confirm where they were taken.

Staff were also evacuated safely.

There’s no word on when inmates and staff will be able to return to the facility.
